Axiology: Aesthetics-What is beauty/beautiful?

It is important to remember that each visual appeal communicates to viewers the cinematographer’s concept of beauty. Camera angles, lens choices, composition, costume choices, music, editing/effects, and even the narrative and screenplay should all be designed to heighten our emotional reaction to what we are watching.

Withholding my affinity for the chemistry between Marion Cotillard and Leonardo DiCaprio onscreen, I would like to point out how Nolan uniquely taps into human attraction toward the authenticity and power of creation. Viewers are walked through the art of dream architecture by Cobb alongside his apprentice Ariadne. How fascinating she finds the ability to alter her surroundings; and how fascinating a scene for many American viewers, many of whom have merely had the exposure to American simulacrum representing France! Not to mention, Edith Piaf’s “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien” not only symbolically and harmoniously fits the film’s narrative, but composer Hanz Zimmer incorporates the tune in to the deeper levels of dream worlds as time slows down by slowing the song down. Genius.
